English/Communications Resources and Lab

Welcome to the Learning Center English/communications lab. The English lab is staffed by a professional English instructor and peer tutors. All will give assistance at every level of the writing process, from brainstorming to refining the final draft and from grammar to documenting the research paper. Tutoring is FREE and no appointment is necessary. Check with the coordinator at 904.381.3449 for specific times and let us help you hone your writing and grammar skills. We can also help you review for the college-level academic skills test (CLAST) test with materials in grammar, reading and essay writing that are specifically designed for the CLAST. Current term schedules may be obtained from the one of the two revolving display racks in the Learning Center or from the English area table.

Study Tips for English and Literature	Skills Tutor - a comprehensive, interactive, web-based computer program including grammar, reading, writing style, science and mathematics. Students may access this program from their home computers. Excellent for skill review or practice. See any Learning Center coordinator or peer tutor to be entered into this program.
Writing Tutor IV - a self-registering, grammar-intensive, interactive computer-based program that offers grammar problems in multiple choice, sentence and paragraph format.	Mastery Reading Tests - (reading and vocabulary) – three self-registering programs designed to build, improve or advance a student’s reading and vocabulary skills. Mastery Tests may also be accessed online.
English Grammar and Sentence Construction - this page encompasses a cornucopia of subjects from adjectives and adverbs to usage. It provides brief explanations and examples. Some examples even diagram the sentences for further understanding.	Award-Winning English Grammar Web Site - this website is very detailed in all aspects of writing. Whether it is ENC 0001, ENC 0021, ENC 1101 or ENC 1102, this site covers, in detail, the three main levels of writing: sentence, paragraph and essay. Punctuation and actual development (i.e., brainstorming) are both addressed. A good site for individuals beginning their writings. Great search engine!
Writing Style and Composition – the brief online version of the book. It is very detailed on the subjects it covers. It covers topics such as usage and style, composition, homonyms and misspelled words. A great resource for the English composition (ENC 1101 and ENC 1102) student.	English Grammar Rules – updated frequently, this site offers VERY brief explanations of major grammar rules and contains good reference material, with which to supplement grammar textbooks.
English Handouts – over 130 instructional handouts on every topic you can imagine! This site also is useful for ESL students. It is a great reference for any course. Modern Language Association (MLA), American Psychological Association (APA), technical, business and journalistic types of writing are all covered in detail. Exercises, examples and answers are all provided at this site.	Interactive MLA documentations - an excellent interactive site from the Ingram Library, University of West Georgia.
Literature, poetry, and Writing - excellent resource material from the Ingram Library, University of West Georgia.	Academic Resources Core Links - Ken Foster's comprehensive list of websites with explanations and tutorial sites covering most disciplines from accounting to Visual Basic. A must-use site for students.
