Interior Design Technology
The Florida Community College interior design technology program is designed to prepare students for careers in the field of interior design and decoration. It is a multi-disciplinary program with courses offered by the interior design and engineering technology departments. Core educational components of the program include:
- architectural design
- art principles
- characteristics and performance of textiles
- decorating and design skills
- history of interiors
- materials and sources
- professional practice, accessible interiors, space planning and computer skills
- selection, arrangement and maintenance of furniture and accessories
Florida Community College provides two degree alternatives within the interior design technology program: the associate in science (A.S.) degree, which prepares students for employment or transfer to a state university. The A.S. degree prepares students to enter the workforce upon graduation.
In order to be licensed by the State of Florida as an interior designer, a student of a two-year program such as this one must work for four years before sitting for the national licensing exam, while a student from a four-year program must work for two years before sitting for the exam. Many employers find the practical experience of licensed Florida Community College graduates highly desirable.
