We currently offer the following classes at the Center for Lifelong Learning.

Zora Neale Hurston: Genius of the South

This class will examine the multifaceted talents of Zora Neale Hurston, a Renaissance woman: anthropologist, novelist, folklorist, short story writer, playwright, and feminist of the mid-twentieth century. You will read from primary texts and critiques to develop an understanding of place and history in the development of a writer with North Florida roots who has been characterized in many ways, one being that of “genius.”

Brenda Simmons is the recently retired Dean of Instruction and Student Services at FCCJ who wrote her doctoral dissertation on Hurston.

Energy: Yesterday, Today, and Where Can We Go From Here?

Examine and discuss current energy issues ranging from coal, oil, gas, and nuclear, to “green” alternatives including solar and wind. Historical and political perspectives on fuel and energy alternatives, as well as technical advantages and limitations will be considered. Explore the likelihood for new technology to affect energy choices, and learn of opportunities for conservation.

Joe Carlson is an economist who has worked in a wide range of energy fields, including nuclear (reactor licensing), aerospace, solar and wind research, and oil. He spent 25 years with ExxonMobil managing government relations programs in Latin America, Russia, and the Middle East.

Euripides: Hecuba and Trojan Women

These two plays by the great Athenian playwright are companion plays and are meaningful today. Both plays deal with the sufferings of the losers in war. We will review Greek Mythology, the origins of the Trojan War and Athenian history of the Fifth Century, B.C.

Bernie McCabe, teaching in his tenth year in this program, taught literature for many years before moving to Florida.

Sing at First Sight II

This class is a continuation of Sing at First SightIf you read music and would like to increase your sight reading and sight singing ability, this class is for you. It is taught in a relaxed atmosphere and even if you didn’t take the first session, you will be able to participate fully in the second. The class will be taught once a week for six weeks on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. There are no tests, but you will move more quickly if you practice at home between sessions.

Jane taught music at the college level and is the founder and director for the Island Chamber Singers and the Songspinners. She has taught several classes in the CLL program.

From Marrakech to Baghdad: A Brief History of U.S./Middle East Relations

This course provides an overview of the historical relationship between the United States and the Islamic world. You will learn about America’s earliest contacts with the Arab world and the commercial and political developments which have lead to America’s current security crisis stemming from the challenges of political Islam.

Dick Holmes graduated from Harvard, taught at the American University in Cairo, and has over 35 years’ business experience in the Middle East.

Wine Appreciation

This three-evening class will include a wine production overview, elements of taste and wine tasting principles, wine wheel and terminology, and evaluations on wines from France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, the America’s, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Blending, buying and storing, wine ratings and food matching, and developing personal preferences will also be covered. 

Chef Richard Lambert teaches at the Culinary Institute of the South.

Healthy Cooking

Learn how to cook delicious healthy dishes and enjoy a meal with your classmates at the end of each evening.  Six recipes will be reviewed and prepared with the class. The recipes will feature mostly meat-free dishes, assorted grains, vegetables and soy products. Gluten-free low sodium desserts will also be prepared.  Different cooking oils and other “healthier” cooking ingredients will be discussed.

Chef Castleberry teaches at the Institute of the South and has been the Culinary Professor at the Lewis “Red” Bean Technical Center at Florida Community College at Jacksonville in Yulee. He has taught geriatric nutrition for the State of Florida, has owned and operated Castle Catering for 15 years, has extensive experience teaching adult cooking classes, has authored two cookbooks and has been featured on HGTV.

“Speak to Me!” Oral Traditions Explored

This will be a fun, interactive course where oral traditions are examined and explored to uncover their value and how they enhance our cultural and human relationships. Source materials will include books, articles, CD’s, etc.  Reference will be made from sermons, spirituals and folktales, music CD’s, video presentations and live special guests.

Diane Holt Johnson is the Yulee Branch Manager for the Nassau County Library. She performed throughout Northeast Florida in a one-woman Harriet Tubman production that she wrote, performs with the Peck Ensemble, facilitates Diversity Study Circles and has taught classes on the history of the Negro spiritual.

Welcome to the Computer!

This course is a basic introduction to using a computer and exploring the Internet. Topics include, basic operations, storing computer files, introduction to Microsoft Office WORD 2007, Internet basics including banking, shopping, blogs, security, etc., and factors to consider when purchasing a computer. Classes will be held in a computer lab.

Deborah Ballou is a computer consultant who has taught numerous computer-related classes in the CLL program.

The Art of Photography: A Photograhic Seminar

This class will examine and discuss, in depth, the images students bring to class. Each week an assignment will be given to provoke using the camera in a distinct and personal way by encouraging the student to contemplate the difference between “taking” a photograph and “making” a photograph. The purpose of the seminar format is to allow students the time and opportunity to have their work responded to in a comfortable and meaningful manner. This class is open to all who are interested.
