The FCCJ volleyball team defeated St. Johns River Community College on Tuesday night to clinch their 15th straight Conference Championship with an undefeated 4–0 record. The Stars have been undefeated in the conference for the past 15 years.
The team did not fare so well in Miami last weekend returning with a 1–3 record. The coaches had hoped to at least go 2–2 but a very close match with St. Petersburg College dashed those hopes. The Stars lost this match in five games, the fifth game score being 16–14. It was a very close match all the way through.
The Stars did defeat Pasco–Hernando Community College in four games on Friday evening after losing the early afternoon match to the #2 ranked team in the nation, Iowa Western Community College. The Stars held their own, but the Iowa team just had too many weapons. In the playoffs on Saturday, the Stars met up with perennial national power Miami Dade College. FCCJ took the first game but lost the match in four with the last game score at 25–23. This was a tough tournament as six of the eight teams were ranked in the Top Twenty in the nation. It was a volleyball war and a great experience for the team.
Allyson Goldbach was selected as the Player of the Week in Region VIII this week for her performance against Brevard Community College. She had 15 kills, a .409 kill percentage, 19 digs and two blocks.
The Stars are now 19-4 overall, 11-2 in FCCAA competition and 4-0 in the Mid-Florida Conference.
The team is hosting the FCCJ Fall Invitational this weekend with their playing times being 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, and noon on Saturday.
The FCCJ volleyball team defeated Brevard Community College at home last Friday night. The Stars won the match in three games with the set scores of 25–17, 25–17 and 25–23. This moves the Stars record to 16–1 overall and 9–0 in the Region. Allyson Goldbach had 13 kills, 19 digs and two service aces. Nina Kontrec had six kills and 16 digs while KaLee Duggan had 9 digs and 24 assists in two games for a 12 assists per game average. Allison Riner had 12 assists in the game she set and Shawna Cain contributed 6 kills and 15 digs.
Courtney Overstreet was selected as the Player of the Week in Region VIII for her performance last week against Lake Sumter Community College. She averaged 4.0 kills per game and had three blocks (1.0 blocks per game) for the defense. For the match, she had an impressive offensive attack with an 80.0% hitting efficiency.
The Stars travel to Miami this weekend to match their skills against five other nationally ranked teams. This will be a great tournament and a test for the team.
The Stars are now 16-1 overall, 9-0 in FCCAA competition and 2-0 in the Mid-Florida Conference. The team is still ranked 19th in the nation by the national poll.
The FCCJ volleyball team defeated Lake Sumter Community College at home last Tuesday night for their second conference victory. The Stars won the match in three games with the set scores of 25–12, 25–9, 25–21. Courtney Overstreet had an outstanding 12 kills with no errors to hit .800 for the match. Shaked Dill had 9 kills with a hitting average of .471 as well as three serving aces. KaLee Duggan had 20 assists, Allison Riner had 11 assists, Shawna Cain and Olivia Drew each had 10 digs, and Ashley Benchina contributed three blocks. It was a great team effort.
Over the weekend the FCCJ team travelled to Panama City for the Gulf Coast Community College Tournament. The Stars went undefeated at 4–0 for the tournament defeating Bevill State Community College, Gulf Coast Community College, Pensacola Junior College and Central Alabama Community College.
The Stars are now 15–1 overall, 8–0 in FCCAA competition and 2–0 in the Mid–Florida Conference. The team also moved up in the national poll to 19th in the nation.
The team plays Brevard Community College at home this Friday night, October 3 at 6 p.m. See you at the South Campus Sports Center to support the Stars.
The FCCJ Volleyball Team continued its winning ways at the Valley of the Sun Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz., by going 5–1 against some very tough competition. The Stars defeated Eastern Arizona College, Western Arizona College, Snow College, Glendale Community College and South Mountain Communtiy College. The only JUCO loss was to the home team, Scottsdale Community College. The team also won its first conference match on Sept. 9, defeating St. Johns River Community College in three straight games.
The Stars are now 10–1 overall, 5–0 in FCCAA competition and 1–0 in the Mid–Florida Conference. The team is also ranked 20th in the nation in the national poll.
The team plays another conference opponent, Lake Sumter Community College, on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. at the South Campus Sports Center. Come support the Stars!
The FCCJ Volleyball Team began the 2008 season by winning the FCCJ Fall Classic Tournament on August 29–30. The Stars defeated Cape Fear Community College, Gulf Coast Community College and Pensacola Junior College to take the title. The team won each match in three straight sets. As a result the Stars begin the season with a 3–0 record.
- Nina Kontrec, a freshman right side hitter, had 23 kills, 22 digs, three blocks and seven service aces.
- Allyson Goldbach, a sophomore All–American from last season, had 23 kills, 11 aces, 19 digs and five blocks.
- Sara Holland, a sophomore Middle Blocker, had four kills, three blocks, 14 digs and a service ace.
- Shaked Dill, a sophomore outside hitter, had 23 kills, three aces, 26 digs and three blocks.
- KaLee Duggan, our freshman setter, had a great tournament with 74 assists, six aces, 22 digs and six blocks.
KaLee, Allyson and Nina each made the All–Tournament Team for the tournament.
