Jeffrey R. Smith, D.M.D.
Instructional Program Manager, Dental Programs, North Campus
Number of years at FCCJ: almost 2
Upon graduating from dental school, I moved to the Bronx where I initially practiced in a community health center. After two years there, I began searching for a dental practice to associate with. I also began my first experience as an educator when I was hired as a clinical faculty member for Columbia University's Dental School. After ten years of clinical practice in New York City, I was ready for new challenges and a change of scenery. I moved to the Seattle area where I helped start a dental hygiene program in a local technical college. After ten years of constant rain (not really), my wife and I decided to leave the Northwest for Florida and sunshine.
Every day, I feel blessed to work with such a creative, motivated, and inspiring group of faculty and staff. The students are anxious to learn and excited about their new careers. Every day is a challenge, but it is wonderful to be part of a team that strives, at times fitfully, for the same goals. I am truly having the time of my professional life!
I grew up in York, PA. I am a 1980 graduate of West Chester State College in PA. where I completed a dual major in chemistry and biology. My focus at the time was getting into dental school which I did upon graduation. I entered the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Dental Medicine in the Fall of 1980 and graduated four years later.
I enjoy dabbling with technology, particularly computers, and I love to cook, though I am only marginally proficient at it. My wife, Laura, and my son, Tyrik, are the beneficiaries of my culinary endeavors, for better or for worse. I also have a cat, Trini, who thinks she’s a puppy dog; I’ve chosen not to dissuade her of that notion because she is so darned cute.
