Florida Community College at Jacksonville Debate Team awarded five state championships in FCCAA tournament; Coach of the Year; Silver overall

The Speech and Debate Team at Florida Community College at Jacksonville walked away with five first-place championships at the Annual Florida Community College Activities Association Forensics Tournament held Feb. 20-23 at Tallahassee Community College. The team placed second overall in this statewide tournament; third in the Debate Sweepstakes and second in the Individual Event Sweepstakes. Coach Kristopher Copeland was named Coach of the Year. In all, the team garnered 38 honors in team and individual events.

Josh Bird and Jenessa Spaulding took the State Champion title in Parliamentary Debate.

The State Champion title in Readers Theatre went to the FCCJ team for their interpretation of “Goodbye,” an adaptation from five diverse scripts sculpted into a unified production themed on the ways we say goodbye. Readers Theatre team included Ruthie Bonfante, Heather Bureau, Keegan Godwin, Andrea Jackson and David LaMoureaux.

Individual State Champion titles were won by Heather Bureau in Communication Analysis; Josh Bird in After-Dinner Speaking and Jenessa Spaulding in Persuasion.

Also winning awards in the following categories were:

Parliamentary Debate — LaMoureaux and Bureau (third).

Dramatic Interpretation — LaMoureaux (second), Takoya Walker (third), Bird (fourth).

Communication Analysis — Bird (second), Spaulding (fourth), Godwin (fifth).

Poetry — Bureau (fourth) Andrea Jackson (fifth), Spaulding (sixth).

Program Oral Interpretation — LaMoureaux (third), Bureau (sixth), Bird (seventh).

Informative — Jackson (second), Ruth Bonfante (fourth), Godwin (sixth).

After-Dinner Speaking — Godwin (second), LaMoureaux (fourth), Spaulding (fifth).

Prose — LaMoureaux (second), Walker (fifth), Jackson (sixth).

Persuasion — Bureau (third).

Impromptu — Bird (third), Bureau (fourth), LaMoureaux (fifth).

Duo — LaMoureaux, Walker (fourth).

Pentathlon — LaMoureaux (fifth), Bird (sixth).
