Jobs for Florida’s Graduates sponsoring competition to provide experience for students

What: Poetry Slam and Open Mike
Student competition sponsored by Jobs for Florida’s Graduates and Pathways Academy
When:

Open Mike (open to public for attendance and presentation)—noon–1 p.m.
Pathways student competition (open to public for attendance)—1:15–3 p.m.

Where: Florida Community College Downtown Campus
Bldg. A, Room 1068 (Large Auditorium)
101 W. State St., Jacksonville
Cost: $3 for students; $5 general admission/general seating.

Details: A poetry slam is “the competitive art of performance poetry,” with dual emphasis on writing and performance. In a poetry slam, competitors present original poetry or prose and are judged according to set rules that may vary from slam to slam. All Pathways students are eligible to participate in the competition; two winners will be selected by guest judges. This event is the first accredited Poetry Slam held by JFG (Jobs for Florida’s Graduates) and Pathways Academy. The admission cost will be added to the state-wide effort to raise $25,000 for additional students to attend the Tallahassee Poetry Slam. Open Mike is from noon–1 p.m. During this time FCCJ students and individuals from the public can perform their own spoken word pieces. Competition is open only to Pathways Academy students.

The winners will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Tallahassee, Fla. to compete in the state level Poetry Slam. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to network, showcase their talents, and observe the talents of others from around the state. Nationally known four-time Slam winner Taylor Mali will be in attendance at the state event. Performers are reminded that material presented should be appropriate for students in terms of topic and language.
