State-of-the-Art Dance Studio Opens at Florida State College at Jacksonville

Jacksonville, FL — After over a year of planning and construction, the faculty and students of Florida State College’s dance department officially celebrated their dream come true: a new, large rehearsal and studio space with state-of-the-art flooring and hi-tech sound system. The celebration included a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the South Campus led by South Campus President Denis Wright and Professors of Dance Rosemary Fletcher and Lebritia Sindija. The ceremony was followed by a lively dance performance by the students in the new space.

“This represents an incredible advancement for our dance program,” said Dr. Wright. “This is a superior space that will allow our students to receive an even better dance education and grow into the dancers they are meant to become. Additionally, it is part of the overall upgrade of our athletics program, which includes a new gymnasium. These improvements and additions demonstrate Florida State College’s commitment to the quality of our student’s training and education.”

The new dance studio space is over twice the size of the original rehearsal and classroom area. It features professional quality flooring that offers excellent shock absorption perfect for jumps and leaps, as well as floor-to-ceiling mirrors, adjustable stretching bars, natural lighting and a room divider so different groups can rehearse at the same time.

“I can’t begin to express the level of appreciation and excitement we are all feeling about this new space,” said Professor Fletcher. “Having ample room to move and the proper flooring to help protect our bodies are essential for both the practice and perfection of dance. This is a space to be proud of — a gift for our students and the many internationally renowned guest artists who work with us here every year.”

The Dance program at Florida State College is at the South Campus location. It offers 18 classes each semester and serves over 350 students. Guests at the ribbon-cutting ceremony included Florida State College faculty, current and former dance program students and members of danceWORKS Visionary Board.
