Choreographer Rujuta Vaidya’s Bollywood moves come to Jacksonville via FCCJ danceWORKS March 26, 27
Rujuta Vaidya, acclaimed Bollywood choreographer and choreographer for the 2009 Academy Awards®, will have a local showcase for her work with FCCJ’s performing company, danceWORKS, on March 26-27. Vaidya worked with danceWORKS in between choreography assignments for a Britney Spears video and the Oscars®.
There will be two performances, on March 26 at 7:30 p.m. and March 27 at 8 p.m. at the Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts on the FCCJ South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd. General admission seating is $10; seniors, military and non-FCCJ students $8; and FCCJ students $5.
The company will also perform “Title,” an evocative animalistic work by Sonsheree Giles, choreographer, and teacher of AXIS Dance Company in California. Heather Maloy, founder of Terpsicorps Dance Theater of Asheville, North Carolina showcases her rock ballet to be performed in the concert as well. Jacksonville’s Braided Light Dance Project will premier Kate Gamble’s “Avenue A,” a quintet with music by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Ani DeFranco. The work is inspired by her years living as an artist in New York. The dance company known as The Company will present “Levels of Sincerity.” The Company is known especially for its aerial work.
The dance department at FCCJ, directed by Professor Rosemary Fletcher and Professor Lebritia Sindija, is dedicated to bringing the best of dance arts to Jacksonville audiences, while at the same time bringing in internationally renowned artists to work with their students.
