Details: (From notes of Director Ken McCulough) “Holy Ghosts” is an honest, funny, and ultimately moving study of a Southern religious cult. To recover his runaway wife Nancy, the hard-drinking and brutal Coleman Shedman arrives at the rural meeting house of a Pentecostal sect with his lawyer. Nancy is unwilling to leave her new “husband,” the Rev. Obediah Buckhorn, and return to Coleman. When Buckhorn arrives, Coleman realizes he will not be able to take back his wife by force. Rich with atmosphere and the feel of Southern rural life, “Holy Ghosts” blends humor and poignancy as it probes into the circumstances and stories of the various cult members and the meaning of faith. “Holy Ghosts” was first produced in 1971 as a workshop at East Carolina University and produced well over 150 times at professional, community, and academic theatres around the country over the past 38 years, including a production directed by Linney at Houston’s Alley Theatre in 1983. A San Diego Repertory Theatre production was brought to New York in 1987 as the key production in the Joyce Theatre Festival. Linney, father of actress Laura Linney, lives in New York City but was raised in the hills of Tennessee. He has written three novels and over a dozen plays, including “Childe Byron” and “April Snow.”
The FCCJ DramaWorks production of “Holy Ghosts” features 15 student actors and 10 crew members from all areas of the First Coast. It is directed by Professor of Theatre Ken McCulough and features set and lighting designs by Director of Technical Theatre Johnny Pettegrew.
NOTE: This production contains mature language and content. It is not recommended for audiences under age 17.
