Florida Community College graduate Sherry Hogan to receive statewide recognition
LeRoy Collins Award recognizes distinguished community college graduates while paying homage to former governor, community college pioneer

Sherry Hogan, 1997 graduate of Florida Community College at Jacksonville, 2000 graduate of Wellesley College (cum laude) in Wellesley, Mass., and director of development at the Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art (JMOMA), will be a recipient of the 2003 LeRoy Collins Distinguished Community College Alumni Award. Hogan will be presented the award in a ceremony held in Orlando on Oct. 30. The ceremony is part of an annual gathering of the Florida Association of Community Colleges.

The Collins Award honors distinguished Florida alumni for their involvement in college, community, state or national matters. Award-winners are individuals for whom their community college experience played an integral part in their success. Hogan attributes many of her skills to opportunities presented to her while an adult student at Florida Community College. Hogan is a graduate of the Challenge Program, sponsored by the College’s Women’s Center, to help displaced homemakers. After completing the Challenge Program, she continued her studies while being heavily involved in activities and committees inside and out of the College.

Even though she earned an associate in arts degree with honors, she was turned down on her first attempt to be accepted at Wellesley College, one of the best in the nation. She persisted though; was accepted and graduated with honors.

Hogan continues her community involvement as a volunteer, mentor and board member for several organizations, in addition to her senior staff position at JMOMA.
The Collins Award is named for former governor LeRoy Collins. As a public servant, Collins was a strong supporter of education and was instrumental in the formation of the Florida Community College System.
