Florida Community College educator selected
to attend national leadership institute AVP of Liberal Arts one of 30 chosen by national panel as potential
presidential material
A Florida Community College educator has been selected as one of 30
to attend a major national leadership institute for senior-level community
college leaders.
Dr. Margarita Cabral-Maly, associate vice president of liberal arts,
will attend the Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) in Tempe, Arizona,
December 7-12. She was chosen by a national panel, along with 29 other
leaders identified as potential community college presidents, from
a pool of about 100 candidates. As associate vice president of liberal
arts, she provides leadership for liberal arts and sciences program
development, initiative implementation and evaluation with the College’s
five campuses and five centers.
ELI participants are given a unique opportunity to “review their
abilities and interests, refine their skills and participate in discussions
on leadership with outstanding community college leaders,” as
described by the League for Innovation. The program is designed to
give future presidents a “solid foundation for understanding
and addressing key issues in 21st Century community college leadership.” Of
the more than 480 participants who have graduated from ELI since 1988,
42 percent have since become presidents. Seventy percent of the first
graduating class in 1988 have become presidents.
The Institute is sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community
College, in cooperation with the University of Texas at Austin and
the American Association of Community Colleges.
