The Reading Rally will kick-off the Great Neighborhoods
Project adult literacy site at St. John’s Lutheran
Church. Springfield, Durkeeville and Lower eastside residents
are invited to participate in no-cost weekly tutoring sessions
to improve their reading and computer information skills,
and workshops to better understand their finances, homeownership
preparation and maintenance. Sessions begin June 16, meeting
Thursday nights from 6:30–8:30 p.m. Faculty and students
will provide the tutoring and instruction, led by Professor
Nadine Whitfield and hosted by Rev. William Hamilton. Freddie
Mac, the local HUD office, Potter’s House and Fresh
Ministries are providing the financial and home ownership
workshops. Other partners include Fresh Ministries, Andrew
Jackson High School, A. Philip Randolph Academies of Technology,
Jacksonville Urban League, Potter’s House, and MADDADS.
The “Great Neighborhoods Project” is a community
initiative headed up by Florida Community College and some
30 community partners—businesses, non-profits, churches,
educational institutions and city agencies. With a start-up
grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
Office of University Partnerships and matches from the
College and its partners, community outreach services have
been created in the areas of adult literacy, technical
assistance to small businesses and nonprofit organizations
for Hogans Creek neighborhoods. For more information
about “Great Neighborhoods” contact Dr. Kathryn
Birmingham at 904.632.3026. |
