Florida Community College District Board of Trustees elects 2005-2006 officers
The Florida Community College District Board of Trustees elected new officers at the first meeting of the 2005-2006 fiscal year, held on August 2.
Elected to chair the Board is Emily B. Smith, an avid community volunteer and a College trustee since 1999. She served as Vice Chair of the Board for Duval County for the 2002-2003 academic year. In addition, she is an active member of the Florida Community College Foundation Board of Governors, recently ending her term as president of that Board. Smith graduated from Emory University in 1969 with a Bachelor's degree in marketing and business administration and also attended the University of North Florida. Smith holds a real estate license and worked in real estate sales for a time before leaving that field to devote more time to her family and community. She serves on the board of the Otis F. Smith Foundation and was elected chairman of the Foundation for the 1998-1999 term. Ms. Smith also serves on the Leadership Council of Take Stock in Children, an organization that promotes individual mentoring to middle and high school youth, on the Advisory Board of Seamark Ranch, a Christian home for abused and neglected children, on the Foundation Board of the Independent Living Center and on the Endowment and Operating Board of Communities and Schools.
David F. Miller Jr. will serve as Vice Chair for Nassau County. He was appointed to the Board of Trustees by Governor Bush in 2003. Miller is a partner in the DF Miller Development Company and former owner and CEO of Pure Ice of the South. Following his graduation from Duke University in 1976, he became a partner in the public accounting firm of Coopers and Lybrand. His professional and civic affiliations include service as member and past-president of the Florida Community College Foundation Board of Governors, member of the board of directors of the International Packaged Ice Association, the Southern Ice Exchange Association and the North Florida Council of Boy Scouts. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Rotary Clubs in both Tennessee and Florida.
N. Wyman Winbush II will serve as Vice Chair for Duval County. He has served on the Board of Trustees since 1999. Winbush is a sales manager for IBM and serves as a commanding officer in the Naval Reserves at NAS Jacksonville. He received a B.S. degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and an M.B.A. degree from Jacksonville University. In addition to his experience on the College's Board of Trustees, Winbush served as a member of the Florida Community College Foundation for six years and has supported the College's GRADS program as a motivational speaker and trainer. He is a graduate of Leadership Jacksonville and has performed community volunteer work in many capacities, such as working as a mentor/motivator for middle school and high school students in goal setting and achievement.
The Board's six other trustees include Earlene T. Lockett, M. F. Mass, M.D., Thomas R. McGehee, Jr.
and Michael B. Weinstein serving Duval County; and Linda H. Asay and Suanne Z. Thamm, immediate past chair, serving Nassau
County.
