Florida Community College prepares to launch charter school in August 2006
Duval County School Board approves application at Nov. 1 meeting

With the approval of its Charter School Application by the Duval County School Board, Florida Community College at Jacksonville is preparing to open the aptly-named "Pathways" to about 160 new students--former dropouts--in August 2006.

This new charter school, to be housed at the College's Downtown Campus, will provide academic, career, character and life instruction to high school dropouts in a simultaneous secondary and postsecondary curriculum. Comprehensive case-management services will help to ensure student success in an environment that is academically rigorous, with individualized attention and innovative curricula--and high expectations for student conduct.

Career development is an important part of the program, leading students on the path to high-wage, high-demand jobs in allied health, automotive technology, construction, IT and advanced manufacturing.

The rigorous schedule of academics, career training and enrichment will keep students on track five days a week, from 8 a.m. until as late as 5:45 p.m. on some days, for fall and spring terms. In the summertime, students will be immersed in internships, employment and academic remediation, if needed.

"These students are facing their futures, and their future is Jacksonville's future," said Downtown Campus President Edythe Abdullah. "We are honored that Duval County Public Schools has entrusted this responsibility to us. An educated and skilled workforce is an integral part Jacksonville's Blueprint for Prosperity. We have the experience, the talent and the will to see these students succeed."

Prospective students, parents or guardians may call 904.633.8119 or e-mail mzuniga@fccj.edu if they wish to receive more information or a Pathways application.
