Extended enrollment dates for Summer Career Academies: FREE career exploration for Duval County ninth graders during month of June

Spaces are still available in many of the Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) and Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ) “Summer Career Academies,” a month-long exploration of career and education opportunities. The academies are designed to help prepare Jacksonville high-school students for life after high school in a fun learning environment.

Summer Career Academies will meet weekdays June 4–June 29 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. to explore career fields at FCCJ campuses and centers. Students who will be in ninth grade in the 2007–2008 school year can apply to learn about careers in Automotive (FCCJ Advanced Technology Center), Aviation (FCCJ Aviation Center of Excellence), Business (Kent Campus), Construction (Downtown Campus; also available at FCCJ Nassau Center in Yulee). Academies in Health, Robotics and Animation are filled, sorry! Scholarships are available for applicants accepted to the program, which is valued at more than $700.

Students will be part of fun, hands-on activities and academics, gaining professional skills in a college setting. Emphasis is on mathematics and reading skills. Parents and students are encouraged to complete admission applications as soon as possible and submit as directed via fax or postal mail. More information on the available academies appears below.

Dream and Build Summer Academy
Do you want to own your own business and be your own boss? Discover the rewarding elements of a construction career through learning hands-on building skills, going on construction site field trips, and exploring how math and reading skills play an important part in being successful in this career field. Students will study the field of construction while building their own dog house. Performance Plus! Automotive Summer Academy
Do you love cars? Do you want to know more about how they work? Well “slow your roll” and sign up for the Performance Plus! Automotive Summer Academy. You’ll get the low-down on things like basic steering and suspension, plus information on how reading and math can help you become a top-performer in this career field. T.R.U.M.P. (Teaching Real World Understanding of Money and Power)
Business Summer Academy

This academy will help open doors to a wealth of opportunities. Participants will watch their money grow on the stock exchange, market a product and explore careers while discovering how math and reading skills play a key role in their personal and financial success. Soaring Scholars Summer Academy
Participants in this academy will explore how mathematics and reading apply to the thrilling field of aerospace. Hands-on projects and local field trips will guide participants through a survey of careers in the aerospace industry. For more information call 904.997.2813; fax 904.997.2839.
