Bio

Chef Joe Harrold is the chef instructor for International Cuisine and American Regional Cuisine at Florida Community College. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has been working in kitchens since the age of thirteen, starting out as a dishwasher on the weekends. “The only other job I had was playing bass in a rock band,” says Chef Harrold.

He is a graduate of Johnson & Wales University’s culinary school and has a bachelor’s degree in workforce education from Southern Illinois University. Prior to his career at FCCJ, Chef Harrold worked in Philadelphia-area country clubs, restaurants and the Community College of Philadelphia.

In 1990, FCCJ hired Chef Harrold to start the culinary program. He uses three teaching styles in his classes: lectures, cooperative learning and hands-on work. “I try to balance all three in each class. I strongly feel that students get bored if you just use one of these methods.”

Just as he makes an effort to deliver his teaching, Chef Harrold expects the same level of commitment from his students. Students must get to class on time, he says. “If you are not on time for class you won't be on time for work. I am teaching students to go out into the workforce. So I must teach real life situations.”

Chef Harrold and his wife of 25 years, Ruth, live in St. Augustine with their two daughters Adrienne and Brittany. As for hobbies, he says, “I’m an avid tennis player and enjoy fishing at my cabin on a lake on the Florida and Georgia border.”
