Human Services (Addictions Counseling Specialization) (2291)

The Career: Graduates of this A.S. degree program
are eligible to apply for entry-level positions in the addictions
treatment field. Professionals in this field provide individual
and group counseling to deal with substance abuse issues, develop
individual treatment plans, provide correspondence to referral
sources and maintain a code of ethics. Typical job titles include
program assistant, mental health technician and counselor-in-training.
The Program: This program is designed to meet
the didactic requirement for admission to the CAAP-1 exam, however,
admittance to the exam also requires the applicant to document
approximately 3,000 hours of applicable job experience. For specifics
concerning the CAAP-1 exam, please contact the Certification
Board for Addictions Professionals of Florida, 1715 South
Gadsden Street, Tallahassee, Florida, 32201. Classes are offered
at North Campus in the evening.
The number of jobs available is expected to grow 36% within the next ten years. Employees starting
in this field typically earn between $12-$15 an hour and generally average $22,300 annually.
This program prepares students for the Certified Associate Addictions
Professional 1 (CAAP-1) exam.

the University
of North Florida and Nova

The program admits students each Fall and Spring terms. Admission
is limited because of clinical placement concerns. All courses
prefixed with HUS are offered at night on the North Campus. To
apply to the program, students must:
- Have a valid social security number to be
used as a student identification number
- Have a GED or valid high school diploma
- Satisfactorily complete all college preparatory
courses needed
- Complete a program application (obtained
from the program office, 904.766.6663) prior to July 1
- Via enrollment services, ensure they are
degree-seeking and majoring in the Human Services program (2291)

Requirements.
Clinical agencies may require students to undergo drug screening
and criminal background checks prior to placement in the agencies
for clinical experiences. Students whose drug screening and criminal
background checks are unsatisfactory may be denied access to clinical
experiences by the clinical agencies. Withdrawal from the program
may be necessary if students cannot be placed for clinical experiences.
Students who are unable to complete the clinical
requirements after acceptance into selective access programs are not
eligible for refunds of tuition.
