General Information

Traditional learning isn’t for everyone. For one reason or another, you need alternatives to classroom instruction. You want more flexibility and greater opportunities for competing in today’s changing world. Florida State College at Jacksonville’s distance learning — telecourse and online courses — offers educational options that fit your lifestyle.

Before You Register

If you have changed your address or telephone number, please contact any campus enrollment services office to update your records so you will receive College correspondence such as grade reports and graduation information. Records may also be updated via Connections.

The registration process and course fees are the same as those for on-campus courses, with an additional $10 fee for telecourse and a $20 fee for online courses. Other fees may apply. Please refer to specific course listing. (Fees are subject to change.)

Students Outside the Jacksonville Area

If you live outside the Jacksonville area, please call our office (904.632.3151 or 877.633.5950) to discuss which courses are best suited for you.

Standards of Progress

Students who do not contact their instructor or “attend” class within the first two weeks of class will be dropped entirely from the course. At the instructor’s discretion, students may also receive the failure for non-attendance “FN” grade, issued after the session withdrawal deadline.

Classes are often added to meet demand. Check Connections frequently for the most current offerings.

Online Courses

Online courses are conducted via the Internet and feature online learning tools for course content access, research, class communication, assignments and testing. Students follow the professor’s online syllabus and lectures, read assigned text material, participate in online discussions with the instructor and fellow students, complete and deliver research papers, and take tests. Students always have access to their instructor via e-mail and to the “virtual classroom” twenty-four hours a day. All online classes have a $20 fee in addition to any other fee that may apply to the course.

Orientation

Some online courses may require an on-campus orientation meeting with the instructor to address questions and explain course objectives. Other courses provide orientation information online. For orientation requirements, refer to the note listed for each course, and check Connections.

Testing

Some online courses may require on-campus testing. Other courses use online testing. For testing requirements, refer to the note listed for each course, and check Connections. For distance learning testing information call 904.632.3116.

Hardware/Software

All online courses require reliable computer access with personal access to the Internet using current versions of Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer (no other browsers are supported), an e-mail account, Windows 95 or above, and virus-checking software. Students should have basic computer skills, including file management, e-mail, Internet navigation and word processing skills. If special software is required for a course, it will be specified in the note in Connections.
