General Information
Traditional learning isn’t for
everyone. For one reason or another, you need alternatives
to classroom instruction. You want more flexibility and greater
opportunities for competing in today’s changing world.
Florida Community College’s
distance learning — telecourse, online and CD-based courses — offers
educational options that fit your lifestyle.
If you have changed your address or telephone number, please
contact any campus
enrollment services office to update your
records so you will receive College correspondence such as grade
reports and graduation information. Records may also be updated
via Connections (Artemis).
The registration process and course fees are the same as those
for on-campus courses, with an additional $10 fee for telecourse
and CD-based courses, and a $20 fee for online courses. Other
fees may apply. Please refer to specific course listing. (Fees
are subject to change.)
If you live outside the Jacksonville area, please call our office (904.632.3151
or 877.633.5950) to discuss which courses are best suited for you.
Students who do not contact their instructor or “attend” class within
the first two weeks of class will be dropped entirely from the course. At the
instructor’s discretion, students may also receive the failure for non-attendance “FN” grade,
issued after the session withdrawal deadline.
Classes are often added to meet demand. Check Connections (Artemis) frequently for the most
current offerings.
Online Courses
Online courses are conducted via the Internet and feature online
learning tools for course content access, research, class communication,
assignments and testing. Students follow the professor’s
online syllabus and lectures, read assigned text material, participate
in online discussions with the instructor and fellow students,
complete and deliver research papers, and take tests. Students
always have access to their instructor via e-mail and to the
“virtual classroom” twenty-four hours a day. All online
classes have a $20 fee in addition to any other fee that may
apply to the course.
Some online courses may require an on-campus orientation meeting
with the instructor to address questions and explain course objectives.
Other courses provide orientation information online. For orientation
requirements, refer to the note listed for each course, and check Connections (Artemis).
Some online courses may require on-campus testing. Other courses
use online testing. For testing requirements, refer to the note
listed for each course, and check Connections (Artemis).
For distance learning testing information call 904.632.3116.
All online courses require reliable computer access with personal
access to the Internet using current versions of Netscape Navigator
or Internet Explorer (no other browsers are supported), an e-mail
account, Windows 95 or above, and virus-checking software. Students
may activate a free
dial-up account.
Students should have basic computer skills, including file management,
e-mail, Internet navigation and word processing
skills. If special software is required for a course, it will
be specified in the note in Connections (Artemis).
Telecourses
Telecourses consist of professionally-produced video lessons
aired on cable television weekly. Students follow the professor’s
syllabus to complete assigned reading material, watch weekly
airings, complete assignments, complete research papers and
take tests. Students have access to their instructor via phone,
during regularly scheduled office hours, as well as via e-mail.
Some telecourses have an online component. All telecourse classes have a $10 fee in addition to any other
fees that may apply to the course.
Most telecourses require an on-campus orientation meeting with
the instructor to address questions and explain course objectives.
Other on-campus meetings are sometimes required such as review
and testing sessions. For orientation and other meeting requirements,
see the Distance
Learning Web
page and Connections (Artemis).
Regularly scheduled testing is held at the location noted
in the telecourse schedule. Or choose one of the alternate
testing periods. Visit the testing
Web page for details and information. In addition, we have
information on alternative
testing sites.
If the test site is listed as “ONLY,” testing is available only at
that location. See specific class for details.

If you do not have access to cable television,
you may view telecourses at any campus
library. Many courses are also available on CD or DVD and can be checked out from your library. See course syllabus for availability. You can also rent videotapes or access streaming
video of most telecourses from ACT/RMI Media, Inc. for an additional
fee (MAT 0024, MAT 1033, MAC 1105 and SPC 2600 are not
available). For detailed rental information, call ACT/RMI at 800.745.5480
or visit ACT/RMI Media, Inc.
Video streaming — selected courses may be video streamed free to your computer. Students can view some of the Annenberg programs online at Annenberg Media Learner.org. Free sign-up required for first time users.
CD-based Courses
CD-based courses are self-paced courses.
The course consists of textbooks, a study guide, a syllabus and
a set of CDs containing professionally-produced telecourse lessons.
Each course has an assigned instructor. Even though this is a self-paced course, you are expected to complete the course by the end of the term.
You will have access to your instructor via e-mail, phone and postal
mail.
Please note that the standard $10 telecourse fee applies to CD-based courses in addition to any other fees that may apply to the course.
Upon registration for the course, students order course packets
from Follett by calling toll-free 1.877.369.5428 or by visiting the Follett Web Site.
Payment must be made by credit card. Textbooks and CDs having resale value will be bought back as used from Follett. Course syllabi may be accessed
from the
Distance Learning Web page.
CDs are available for check-out from campus libraries.
There are no class meetings, however, most classes require proctored
testing at an approved location. The Consortium of College Testing
Centers provides a list of available locations in the United States
and their associated fees. For information visit the National College Testing Association Web Site. Local students may test at Florida Community College.
Each course packet will have specific information about testing requirements
and procedures.
In order to view the CD, a computer with audio and video capability
is required. A Pentium II 450 Mhz multimedia computer with a 8x
CD-Rom drive running Windows 98SE is the minimum recommended system
for smooth playback of video and audio. Windows Media Player is
required to view lessons and may be downloaded from the Microsoft
Web site.
Video streaming — selected courses may be video streamed free to your computer. Students can view some of the Annenberg programs online at Annenberg Media Learner.org. Free sign-up required for first time users.
