Giving That Second Chance, Time and Again
Lois Lindsey
Adult Education Advisor, Downtown
Campus
As adult education advisor
on the Downtown Campus, Lois Lindsey often uses the image of
a ladder when talking to students about reaching their education
and career goals. To
adult students who never finished high school, reconnecting can
be a challenging, but very rewarding, climb.
Lindsey’s effective “first things
first” approach, along with her positive persona, has motivated
hundreds of students to turn their lives around and succeed.
Her upbeat outlook was instilled at an early age.
“My parents were very nurturing people.
My family traveled a lot, and I was exposed to many cultures,” says
Lindsey, whose father was an architectural engineer. She is sensitive
to the students’ feelings as being “non-traditional,” and
it makes an impact. Lindsey has received several letters from
appreciative graduates over the years. One former student invited
her to Kentucky to see his graduation from Army basic training.
Last year on her birthday, students in the program threw her
a surprise party.
Lindsey received a Bachelor’s degree
in Economics from South Carolina State University. Before joining
the College, she taught elementary school in Rosewood, South
Carolina, and later worked for a marketing firm in Atlanta. Now
in her 11th year, Lindsey started her Florida Community College
career part-time so she could spend more time at home with her
two children before coming on board full time. She works
with Duval County schools on a volunteer basis.
Lindsey is proud to be working with the
adult
education program and our Polytechnic Academy. “I
never say ‘third’ or ‘fourth’ to
anyone who leaves and comes back. This is their second
chance, again. If it’s another term, it’s a
new beginning.”
