Playing It Safe

Aaron Benjamin knows a thing or two about safety. In fact, it’s his profession. His official title is Environmental, Health and Safety Manager, and when he wanted to boost his career potential, his choice was obvious: Florida Community College.

“FCCJ was easily accessible and was compatible with my hectic work schedule,” said Aaron. He recently completed his Associate in Applied Science degree in Assessment and Safety Compliance. And, this Jacksonville native found a lot to like at FCCJ.

“Since my degree program was in applied science, the majority of my classes were specific to safety,” he said. “This provided me the opportunity to have easy access to other business professionals for interaction and discussions about my field. The easiest contacts were my professors. All of them work in the field outside of class time. The other was the occupational socials, when FCCJ brought in representatives of OSHA, the EPA, the Northeast Florida Safety Council and local companies.”

Aaron also found his course work to be state-of-the-art. “The information taught in the classes I attended was in-depth and covered many of the most current updates of the field’s priorities,” said Aaron.

But safety is a career field that takes continual learning. So Aaron is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in environmental management. He also plans to continue on for a master’s degree in environmental science. “I plan to continue working in my field and possibly follow my instructors’ examples and teach our future students,” Aaron said. FCCJ instructors just have a way of inspiring that type of enthusiasm in their students.
